The Tautliner trucks body style was created/first built by the Boalloy Company in Congleton, Cheshire, England. The managing director, Gerald Broadbent, patented the Tautliner make in 1983, he is also known as the inventor of the curtainsider.

Boalloy was taken over by the Stobart Group (another popular transport market player in the UK) in November 2007, due to its poor performance – Today, many other companies across the world offer Tautliner look-alike curtainsider trucks.

Tautliner and curtainsider are names used for curtain sided trucks/trailers. Tautliner is the trade name for commercial load carrying trucks. The curtains (sides) are fixed to a runner at the top with detachable rails at the front & rear, allowing the curtains to be opened – forklifts are then used to along the sides
for efficient loading/unloading.

Once closed, vertical load restraint straps are attached to a rope rail underneath the truck, connecting the truck bed and curtains along the sides. Winches placed at both sides of the curtains tension it, thus the name ‘Tautliner’ – this prevents the curtain from flapping in the wind.

If the load is within a certain distance from the curtain, the curtains can be rated to restrain a load of a certain weight per meter (m).

Tautliners provides freight security equivalent to that of a dry utility cargo van, while also providing more cargo space than these cargo vans,
thus making them the more economical option.
